“Thornbury Castle Hotel and Tudor Gardens” has a remarkable history, the earliest recorded account of which dates back phenomenally to 925-940 A.D., during the time of King Athelstan, grandson of King Alfred the Great.
Later as it passed ownership through the generations, it was finally castellated in the early 16th century by the 3rd Duke of Buckingham, Constable of England, who began work on the splendid present day Castle.
Malicious rumors of the Duke’s possible ambitions to ascend to the throne had him promptly beheaded by Henry VIII who quickly appropriated the stately castle as a royal desmesne, visited on occasion by both the King and princess Mary Tudor.
Upon her death the Castle was restored to the descendants of the Duke and finally into private ownership during the course of the 20th century. The Castle still preserves the Duke’s bedchambers, later hosting Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn during their secret sojourn.
All guestrooms are simply extraordinary, including stone walls, coronet beds, tapestries, roaring fires and ornate carved ceilings, each room a breathtaking experience for even the most sophisticated traveller
