“Château D’Audrieu”, a fine 18th century castle, traces its beginnings, legend has it, 1000 years back to the time of William the Conqueror, whose personal chef, the Lord of Percy, proved extremely loyal, slaying several Saxons, a feat for which he was named Baron. At the height of his power he established himself in England, whilst retaining ownership of his French lands.

Though his residence at Audrieu seemed quite modest, a simple feudal ‘motte’ or mound, following some recent excavations, its floor plan was uncovered, revealing a half timbered building surrounded by a deep moat enclosing a vast courtyard, wherein it is believed, the Lord’s serfs took refuge from war-like attacks.

The serfs spent their time clearing and dressing the land giving it its pattern of hedges and sunken roads still visible today.

Following alternating periods of war and peace, the castle was finally restored to its present splendour, though still retaining its original shell of enduring Caen stone, a tribute to its founder, the Royal chef, in whose culinary footsteps and great tradition of hospitality this magnificent hotel fondly perpetuates for all its privileged guests.
