“Eremo delle Grazie” is immersed in the sacred green wood of Monteluco and is reached via an ancient road from Spoleto. This solemn place dates back to the 5th century A.D., when St. Isaac fled from persecution in Syria and chose the hill to re-establish hermit life with his followers.

With the passing of the centuries, the hermitage became the spiritual centre for all those who had chosen the life of poverty, prayer and meditation, and the mount became such a large monastery that the “Congregazione dei Padri Eremiti di Monteluco” (Congregation of Hermit Fathers of Monteluco) began.

In 1556, Michelangelo wrote, in his letter to the Vasari, that he had felt ‘un gran piacere nelle montagne di spulati a visitor que’ romiti’ (‘a great pleasure on the mountain of winnowers to visit those (isolated) hermits’).

In the gallery, open the doors of the ancient cells, once lived in by the hermits and today comfortable and hospitable suites, each one with the name of a friar and the most modern amenities.

During the summer months, breakfast is served on the panoramic terrace with its enjoyable and suggestive view of Spoleto. The ancient grotto, which presumably hosted the first hermits in the 15th century, now holds a store of fine wines, dating from 1920 till today.

“Che’ sol nei boschi è pace” (“What sun in the woods is peace”) is the motto reproduced everywhere in this special residence in fascinating Umbria.
