“Castello di Velona”, picturesque medieval fortress of the 11th century, and in that period being the place of great battles between the Republics of Siena and Florence, was successively transformed into an aristocratic renaissance villa, conserving its original fascinating characteristics, such as the splendid courtyard with balconies.
From its panoramic hill, the Castle dominates the suggestive countryside of Val d’Orcia, threaded with little villages and vineyards and of great historic-artistic importance, as confirmed by the Etruscan artefacts, now housed in the Montalcino museum, which were found in this area which has an ancient Etruscan-Roman road dating back to the 1st century B.C. Not far away, there are also traces of the old Francigena way which was travelled on by innumerable and illustrious writers, artists, famous bandits and pilgrims.
