Its history is tied with the rise and fall of the Florio family, who established a tuna station. In fact the traditional mattanza (a complex and ritual way of tuna fishing) occirs on May in Favignana in May.
The island is characterized by beaches and bays which are really evocative, among them there are Cala Azzurra (Blue Bay), a small sandy bay, Cala Rossa (Red Bay), a small rocky bay and the large sandy beach of the Lido Burrone.
The caves are very beautiful, like the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Cave, so named because of the blue colour of its water); the Grotta degli Innamorati (The Lovers' Cove) (for the presence of two identical rocks placed to the wall on the ground) and finally the Grotta dei Sospiri (The Cove of Sighs) (which lets its moanings out when the sea is rough).

LOCATION EGADI ISLES
The Egadi's archipelago comprises the isles of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, along with the two tiny isles of Formica and Maraone.
Shaped in a sort of triangle way, Levanzo il smaller than Favignana and Marettimo, having a surface less than sis square kilometers wide and a coastal line of less than fifteen kilometers.
Just a very few people where living in Levanzo at any time, due to the proximity of Sicily and the limitated water and land resources.
Even the actual village dates back just to 1850: before that time people simply lived in the numerous coves of the isle.
In the northern side of the isle there is the "Cove of the Genuan", a large cove in the rock where numerous prehistoric graffiti and paintings can be viewed. These were discovered in 1949 and are worthwhile for the accuracy of the facture and for the emotinal impact that they give. Their beauty can be compared with the famous graffiti nad paintings of Altamura, in Spain.
Marettimo, the ancient Hiera, with the village rising on the only tiny plain of the isle with the two little harbours used by the local fishermen, is for sure one of beautifulst, incontaminate and interesting islands of Italy, characterized by an extraordinary vegetation, by a cristalline sea and by a wide population of wild animals like red deers, mufloni and wild boars.
Marettimo in summer offers large possibilities to the lovers of the sea and the incontaminata nature, whose quiet is assured by the fact that in all the island there are no cars and a very few asphalted roads.
Green even during the peak of the summer, Marettimo is interesting to discover not only along the coasts. Well maintained paths allow the hikers to have unforgettable panoramas, with breath-taking views of the cliffs of the island.
