A splendid building right in the heart of the extraordinary Alpine scenario of Alta Val Pusteria, the “Parkhotel Sole Paradiso” is near San Candido, a tourist destination in the Dolomites. Originally a farm building, it was built in 1876 by Franz Ortner, the great-grandfather of the present owner. Anticipating the tourist development with the new railway, Ortner transformed the building into the “Albergo al Sole”. Already then, at the beginning of the 20th century, publicity promised “a summer holiday in an area without dust, yet tranquil, idyllic, among woods and open land, in a newly-renovated hotel…. With a lovely shaded garden for guests, with verandas and salons with large picture-windows.”

Nothing has changed since then regarding the tranquillity of the residence, defined by its noted guest, Alcide De Gasperi “a paradise of tranquillity”, testimony being in the gold book of the hotel. Today it is an elegant 4-star residence, which the Ortner family, hoteliers with their hearts and souls in it for four generations, have looked after it with love and competence, continually improving the services offered to guests. The rooms, each one different from another, preserve the historical characteristics of their surroundings with splendid canopy beds and other fine details, yet taking account of the needs of a modern clientele. Reigning uncontested in the kitchen, is the creative Chef Markus Auer, whose “ sweet Tyrolese visions at the buffet” are famous all over Italy.

San Candido is still an ideal base today for those mountain enthusiasts who love the Dolomites of Sesto, the Three Peaks (Tre Cime) and all the other majestic summits near to hand. In winter it is a true paradise for cross-country skiers with ski-tracks going to the Austrian border and then going down towards Lienz, in the Fiscalina Valley (Val Fiscalina) or to Dobbiaco. Other tracks go down into the Ladro Valley (Valle di Ladro), towards Braies Lake (Lago di Braies) or to the Anterselva Valley (Valle di Anterselva)– all surrounded by breathtaking nature whose magic has remained unaltered during the centuries.
