Cliveden House - an Iconic Luxury Hotel
“Cliveden” is poised majestically above the River Thames, commanding regal views of the Berkshire countryside amid 376 acres of magnificent National Trust gardens and parkland, thanks to the clever foresight of its original 17th century founder, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, a notorious rake who built the grand manor as a personal hunting lodge to amuse and entertain his friends and mistress. It emerged phoenix-like following destructive fires, more stunning and glorious than ever.
This grand manor played host to virtually every British Monarch since George I, and Queen Victoria herself, a frequent guest, it is recorded was not at all amused when the palatial house was suddenly sold to William Waldorf Astor, America’s wealthiest citizen.
Cliveden at the turn of the 20th century, became a hectic hub of social gatherings, receiving everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill, President Roosevelt to George Bernard Shaw.
Today, this breathtaking property still retains its grand tradition of impeccable hospitality and extravagant entertainment. With more than four members of staff per room, one can see why it is the embodiment and essence of pure luxury accommodation.
