Monastero Fortezza di Santo Spirito
9.3/10 on 3 reviews
The “Monastero di Santo Spirito” d’Ocre was the first Cistern monk headquarters in the Aquila valley, founded in 1222 by Placido da Roio, on land donated to the monks by Count Berardo d’Ocre, the proprietor of Ocre. The main façade of the imposing fortress is majestic and has just five openings: the carriage entrance with ‘ogivale’ archway, the pedestrian entrance and three elegant two-light mullioned windows, one of which has a leaded spy-hole.
The ecclesiastical hall, the presbytery and the adjoining sacristy-chapel boast arched ceilings and frescoes datable to the 13th century and remains of 16th century paintings attributed to Paolo Mausonio.
After lengthy renovation the Fortress-Monastery of Santo Spirito has returned to life respecting the vision in which it was created: a place of renewal of the soul and warm welcome and open to guests seeking relaxation and tranquillity.
Furthermore, it can host cultural activities, concerts, exhibitions, meetings and receptions.
All the spaces, inside and outside, have been renovated according to their original use which the Cistern monks established in the past. The 12 rooms created in the dormitories on the first floor are basic and comfortable, furnished with wooden furniture, natural fabric, and with private bathroom, television and telephone. Also at the disposition of guests are the library, the wellbeing hall, internet point and wi-fi.
The vast and silent territory which surrounds the mythical, spiritual and very historical location, is an invitation to discover the evocative nature and ancient local traditions on foot, on horseback, in horse-drawn carriage or on mountain bike – amongst rugged mountains, thick woods, thousand-year roads, fortresses and fascinating medieval villages.

His Opinion: The site is very nice. The room very clean and comfortable. The bathroom is a bit tiny and the shower even more. Breakfast in the morning was good.
One drawback: Less than 24 hours before our stay, we were informed of a wedding during the evening. Noise was not bad but catering services at the monastero was not possible.
