Shieldhill Castle Hotel
“Shieldhill Castle” was the historic seat of the notable Chancellor family, one of the oldest in Scotland. Its original construction dates back to the year 1199.
Over the centuries, the Castle was modernised and extended, preserving however many of its original architectural details, such as the front entrance door, with its stone and lock, along with the impressive spiral staircase linking the refurbished entrance hall to the Library, as well as several fine examples of chimney pieces and panelling throughout the Castle, all remnants of a remarkable bygone era of Scotland’s rich history.
No 12th century authentic Scottish Castle could have survived without its resident ghost, at Shieldhill namely the Grey Lady, a daughter of the Chancellor family, said to have fallen in love with a commoner and then taken her own life, broken-hearted, when her father forbade her to marry. Wrapped in a grey cloak she has been seen roaming the grounds of her former home in search of a proper resting ground.
Guestrooms are all gracefully and traditionally appointed to reflect the Castle’s grand, historic past.
