Augusta, in the province of Siracusa, is a center of fundamental historical and strategic importance in Eastern Sicily. Founded by Frederick II of Swabia in 1232, the city is located on a peninsula that borders the vast Rada di Augusta to the north, one of the largest natural harbors in the Mediterranean. Its skyline is dominated by the Swabian Castle (Castello Svevo) and imposing Spanish fortifications that testify to its role as a maritime stronghold. Although it is a significant industrial and port hub, it retains a rich artistic and natural heritage.
