Monastero San Colombo: Historic Residence and Spirituality in Gran Sasso

The Monastero San Colombo in Barisciano is a charming Historic Residence housed in a former 16th-century Franciscan Convent. Immersed in an ancient oak forest and located at 1088 meters above sea level, along the road leading into the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, it offers an atmosphere of deep tranquility and spirituality. The complex has been carefully restored, respecting the original architecture and providing a rejuvenating retreat away from the busy pace of daily life.

Rooms and Suites: The Luxury of Ancient Cells

The 8 rooms of the Monastery, divided into Classic, Superior, and Suite types, were created from the friars’ ancient cells, the granary, and the dovecote. Each room is minimally but comfortably furnished and overlooks the complex’s Botanical Garden. They are all equipped with private bathrooms, heating, LCD TV, and courtesy sets with handmade natural soaps, offering a perfect blend of history, nature, and modern comfort.

Zero-Kilometer Cuisine: La Locanda del Convento

The Locanda del Convento is the in-house restaurant that celebrates the authentic flavors of Abruzzo with cuisine based on seasonality and the zero-kilometer philosophy. Particular attention is given to the use of wild herbs, vegetables, legumes, and cereals sourced from the Park’s territory. The day begins with a rich buffet breakfast, prepared "as it once was" with local and artisan products, for a genuine gourmet experience.

Wellness, Nature, and Research Center

In addition to hospitality, the complex is home to the Appennine Floristic Research Center and a magnificent Botanical Garden. For complete wellness, the Monastery features a dedicated space with a massage room, where relaxing and rejuvenating treatments can be booked. Guests can enhance their experience by participating in cooking classes with wild herbs or soap-making workshops.
